چکیده

Biodegradable implants made from polyglycolic and polylactic acid co-polymers undergo degradation by hydrolysis which results in loss oftheir mechanical strength. The degradation of 1.5 mm polyglycolide rods (Biofix) was studied after intramedullary and subcutaneous implantation in rabbits. Two weeks after implantation there was a 73% reduction in strength of the intramedullary implants and a 64% reduction in the subcutaneous implants. Polyglycolide implants were compared with Kirschner wires for intramedullary fixation of extraarticular fractures in the hand. In one group of patients fractures were fixed with a 1.5 mm inframedullary rod and in a similar group a Kirschner wire was used. In both a wire loop was added for extra fixation. At six months there was no significant difference between the two groups. There were no allergic reactions to the polyglycolide implants.

Surgical Fixation of Fourth and Fifth Metacarpal Shaft Fractures with Flexible Intramedullary Absorbable Rods: Early Clinical Outcomes and Implications.

BACKGROUND To avoid the irritation of tendons and soft tissues as well as hardware-related problems, we designed an intramedullary fixation with bioabsorbable rods for the treatment of the metacarpal shaft fractures. METHODS Five patients with nine shaft fractures of the fourth and fifth metacarpi were treated with intramedullary absorbable implants and followed up with an average of 4.2 mont...

Absorbable implants versus metal implants for the treatment of ankle fractures: A meta-analysis

This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the efficiency and the safety of absorbable implants. Five major electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, SinoMed and Wanfang Data) were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from their establishment to November 2012. Studies on absorbable implants and metal implants for ankle fractures were selected. The meta...

Foreign-Body Granuloma after Metacarpal Fracture Treatment with Absorbable Implants

The treatment of unstable fractures or complex injuries of the hand frequently requires the implementation of rigid internal fixation. Traditionally, metallic implants have been used to achieve stability. However, the complication rates of metallic implants are high, with major complications reported in 36% of the patients considered in a series [1]. These complications included nonunion, delay...

Comparative Study between Osteosynthesis in Conventional and Bioabsorbable Implants in Ankle Fractures

OBJECTIVE To compare the functional results of ankle fractures treated with metallic and absorbable plates. Twenty patients were randomized into two groups (metallic and absorbable implant groups) and followed prospectively. In the immediate postoperative period, patients were immobilized with plaster casts for one week, which was replaced by a removable cast for another four weeks. Partial wei...

A review of current management of metacarpal base fractures.

Metacarpal (MCP) base fractures are less commonly encountered than diaphyseal or metacarpal neck fractures. These are difficult injuries to diagnose and are challenging to treat. Neglect of these injuries, either by missed diagnosis or by inadequate treatment, causes significant disability due a poorly functioning carpo-metacarpal joint. There have been several developments in the management of...
